Quality pre-service teacher education is a key factor in quality Philippine education. In the Philippines, the pre-service preparation of teachers for the primary and secondary educational sectors is a very important function and responsibility that has been assigned to higher education institutions. All efforts to improve the quality of education in the Philippines are dependent on the service of teachers who are properly prepared to undertake the various important roles and functions of teachers. As such, it is of utmost importance that the highest standards are set in defining the objectives, components, and processes of the pre-service teacher education curriculum.
Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) is a four year degree program designed to prepare students to become primary school teachers. The program combines both theory and practice in order to teach students the necessary knowledge and skills a primary school teacher needs. There are several major fields of concentration in the BEED program, namely Early Childhood Education, Special Education, General Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Filipino, Social Studies Music, Arts and Physical Education (MAPE) and Technology and Home Economics (THE).
Objective
- Meet the needs of professional teachers for elementary and secondary schools.
- Prepare elementary teachers who are either generalists who can teach across the different learning areas in grade school or as special education experts or pre-school facilitators.
- Prepare secondary school teachers who are experts in their respective fields of specialization such as: English, Filipino, Mathematics, Biological Science, Social Studies and Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH).
- Recognize and value the nature, needs and problems of the environs from which to draw subject matter and thereby make teaching and learning relevant.
- Possess the knowledge and basic skills necessary to conduct research work.
- Apply the knowledge of and interest in the principles, science and skill for the improvement of life.
